The spindle tree is so called as its wood was used to make spindles, in ancient times unmarried girls ‘spinsters’ would use the wooden spindles to wind wood. It was also used to make skewers and knitting needles. Now it is used to make high quality charcoal for artists. It is a lovely gift for any nature lover, especially those with creative leanings. Its Greek name, Euonymus is said to have meant ‘lucky’. Found across Europe, it is a sign of ancient woodlands.
