The Meaning of Birthstones and Gemstones

Gemstones have fascinated people for thousands of years. Beyond their natural beauty, many stones have long been associated with symbolic meanings such as love, protection, courage and renewal.

Birthstones are especially meaningful because they connect a gemstone with the month someone was born. Giving or wearing birthstone jewellery is a lovely way to celebrate a birthday, mark an important moment, or simply choose a stone whose meaning resonates with you.

In my own handmade jewellery, I enjoy combining natural gemstones with simple silver designs inspired by leaves, acorns, flowers, and the small details of the natural world. A piece of silver jewellery becomes even more personal when it includes a gemstone chosen for its colour, story or symbolism.

When I first introduced the collection of flower inspired birthstone jewellery it was an immediate hit with my customers!

Below is a guide to the traditional birthstones most commonly recognised in the UK, along with the meanings that have often been associated with them.

Birthstones in the UK

January Birthstone - Garnet

Garnet, with its deep red colour, has long been associated with protection and vitality. In ancient times it was carried by travellers as a symbol of safety on long journeys.

Today garnet is often linked with strength, grounding and enduring friendship. Its rich colour makes garnet birthstone jewellery especially striking when set in silver.

February Birthstone - Amethyst

Amethyst is known for its beautiful purple tones and has long symbolised calm, balance and clarity.

Historically it was believed to promote clear thinking and inner peace. Many people choose amethyst jewellery as a reminder to slow down and reconnect with a sense of calm.

March Birthstone - Aquamarine

Aquamarine, whose name means “water of the sea”, reflects the soft blue tones of clear ocean water.

Traditionally associated with tranquillity, courage and protection for travellers, aquamarine is often chosen for its peaceful and refreshing feel.

April Birthstone - Diamond or Crystal

Diamond is the traditional birthstone for April and has long symbolised strength, clarity and lasting love. Because it is one of the hardest natural materials, it has become a symbol of endurance and resilience.

For a more accessible alternative, rock crystal (clear quartz) is sometimes used in birthstone jewellery. Crystal is often associated with clarity of mind, energy and balance.

May Birthstone Emerald

Emerald’s vivid green colour has made it a symbol of nature, renewal and growth for centuries.

Often associated with wisdom, harmony and hope, emerald reflects the lush energy of spring and new beginnings.

June Birthstone - Pearl or Moonstone

June has two traditional birthstones.

Pearls symbolise purity, wisdom and serenity, while moonstone is often associated with intuition, emotional balance and feminine energy.

Both stones have a gentle, luminous beauty that works beautifully in handmade jewellery.

July Birthstone - Ruby

Ruby’s rich red colour has long been linked with passion, vitality and courage.

In many cultures rubies were believed to bring protection and strength to the wearer. Ruby birthstone jewellery often symbolises love, energy and confidence.

  • August Birthstone -Peridot

Peridot is a fresh green gemstone that has been valued since ancient Egyptian times.

Traditionally associated with positivity, prosperity and protection, its bright colour reflects the warmth and abundance of late summer.

September Birthstone Sapphire

Sapphire is most famous for its deep blue colour and has long symbolised wisdom, loyalty and truth.

Because of these qualities, sapphire birthstone jewellery is often chosen as a meaningful gift that represents trust and lasting connection.

October Birthstone - Opal

Opal is known for its magical flashes of colour that shift in the light.

It has often been associated with creativity, imagination and individuality. Because every opal is unique, it is sometimes seen as a stone that celebrates personal expression.

November Birthstone - Topaz or Citrine

November has two recognised birthstones.

Topaz has traditionally symbolised strength and protection, while citrine, with its warm golden colour, is associated with joy, abundance and optimism.

Both stones bring warmth and light during the darker months of the year.

December Birthstone - Turquoise or Tanzanite

Turquoise has been used in jewellery for thousands of years and is often associated with protection, healing and good fortune.

Tanzanite, a deep blue-violet gemstone discovered in Tanzania, is sometimes used as an alternative December birthstone. It is often linked with insight, transformation and inspiration.

Other Popular Gemstones and Their Meanings

Alongside traditional birthstones, many other gemstones are loved for their colour, symbolism and natural beauty.

Rose Quartz

Often called the stone of love, rose quartz symbolises compassion, emotional healing and kindness. Its soft pink colour gives jewellery a gentle, calming feel.

Agate (including Moss Agate)

Agate has long been associated with grounding and stability. Moss agate, with its beautiful green inclusions, is often connected with nature, growth and new beginnings.

Jade

Jade has been treasured in many cultures for centuries and is often associated with harmony, wisdom and good fortune.

Lapis Lazuli

This deep blue stone flecked with gold has long symbolised truth, wisdom and inner vision. In ancient cultures it was believed to encourage insight and self-awareness.

Crystal (Clear Quartz)

Clear quartz is sometimes called the “master healer”. It is widely associated with clarity, energy and balance, making it a popular stone in meaningful jewellery.

These stones are often chosen not only for their colour and beauty but also for the stories and qualities they represent.

Choosing Birthstone Jewellery with Meaning

Gemstones add another layer of meaning to jewellery. Whether chosen to celebrate a birthday, a meaningful month, or mark an important moment, or simply because their symbolism resonates with you, birthstones can make a piece feel deeply personal. And yes, liking the colour is perfectly valid: we all have our favourites!

In my own handmade silver jewellery, I love combining natural gemstones with my designs inspired by leaves, flowers and shells to create fascinating clusters and celebrations of nature.
