I am always grateful to yesterday’s me for tidying up, and forgiving of yesterday’s me if I had to rush off to grab a curveball, leaving it in a tip. I gather the silver casts I am working with, a silver leaf or two to be made into a ring and bracelet, or a selection of silver shells to become a cluster necklace. Or I might gather silver scrap to make recycled silver earrings. Working through the list I file off where the casting ‘sprue’ was through a series of 2 or 3 files and 5 levels of sandpaper. I attach them with the fire, the flux and solder, not forgetting my glasses or goggles because you never know. The moment the silver starts to glow a little, the solder flows into the spaces and hardens when I pull the torch, and heat away. A moment of alchemy, I witness the forces of nature aligned before my eyes. Recycling silver to make the recycled silver pebble earrings is hugely therapeutic. If orders come in after this time they are on tomorrows list. I pop the soldered, now rather messy looking jewellery in a heated pickle solution. I use Picklean, a natural acid I buy from Cookson Gold which is non toxic and easy to use. Once the dark oxides on the pieces are cleaned by the pickle leaving them clean and matte, I polish the jewellery pieces in my tumble machine which takes a few hours. Ordering materials, updating my website, printing labels, social media or writing, emails and whatever else needs to be done. I also have lunch, sometimes a power nap if time allows (essential during those bad long covid days but less common now). This is also when I might work on new jewellery designs. Designing New Jewellery I am excited to be designing more at the moment. Designing new things for my collection often feels luxurious, though it is essential or I would have nothing to sell. I am able to do this more during quieter times, such as in the summer and early in the year, or this ‘while my orders are tumbling around in the polisher’ time. York House Gardens are also very beautiful, as well as Orleans House Gallery, all a stones throw from each other. Petersham Nurseries and Ham House are across the other side of the River Thames, just hop on Hammertons Ferry, for £1. I line them with recycled acid-free tissue and sprinkle delphinium petals because, well you know. A burst of flowery confetti brightens up your morning too right? Especially if you listen to Radio 4 too much. I cut twine to the right size to wrap around the gift box, 12 inches if you are interested. The box is 50% recycled materials and 100% recyclable. (they used to be 100% recycled and I am hoping they will improve their recipe again soon). I stamp my logo on the box. (the logo is quite detailed, so I was warned that it wouldn’t come out with professional foil print. I think it looks great, and it is better for the environment. Next, I assemble with the chain or ear wire or make up the bracelet using my pliers. I straighten rings and bangles on the mandrel with my leather mallet (leather so it doesn’t leave marks). I pop them in their gift boxes. Once they are in their little homes I tie the twine into a bow, add a pretty nature inspired business card and nature quote card (they make great bookmarks) and pop them in the packing box and tape up with sticky paper (Grace and Flora parcels are plastic free). I sling the packets over my shoulder and take them to the post office where theres a 5pm collection. It doubles up as a dog walk: as we trot along the other side of the river, past the oak tree where I plucked the baby oak leaf and acorn I use in my acorn and oak jewellery. Work life balance, structure, and wellbeing are all hand in hand. I worked as a counsellor and psychotherapist for 16 years but I still have to remind myself of these things. Running your own business means creating your own boundaries. There is no boss or structure to adhere to so you have to do it your way. For example, I rarely respond to emails and enquiries in the evenings or at the weekends and don’t often look at Instagram messages. I don’t tend to work at the weekends unless it is designing new things which feels restorative to my wellbeing - creativity feeds the soul. Having boundaries means I can give prioritise my time and service to my paying customers. It also allows me space around the edges to have new ideas, or have creative thoughts to address problems that come up. Creative Blog - Silver Sea Glass Jewellery from Cornwall - Natural Sea Glass Cast your eye over the black sea glass at the front of the picture. according to www.beachlust.com it is likely to be pretty old: During the 1700's most liquor ale/beer bottles were mass produced as a cheap container between the 1840's and 1880's bottles were made in a deep, dark olive green colour. This glass may also be from Champagne bottles, Case Gin bottles or dark green wine bottles. One in two thousand pieces of sea glass might be black. Pirate Glass: This is be backed up by The Sea Glass Company who call it ‘Pirate Glass’ dating this kind of greenish black glass back to the 1700-1800’s. My black sea glass chunk could well be very old indeed, although I have no pirates or sailors from that time to back it up. I am still wondering how to set it - thick silver wire wrapping I think. It is hard to spot - it looks like a pebble but when you hold it up to the light it shines through all that murky history. (I heard that Seaham in Kent is a good place). You will find sea glass on pebble beaches all along the coast. Go when the tide is going out, or is already out - when our treasures are newly revealed. If the beach is still wet, the colour shines brighter to catch your eye. Leave embarrassment at home. The chances are that on a pebbly fishing beach you wont be the only one gazing down looking for sea glass jewels. View competitors as fellow litter pickers and sea glass liberators. A knowing nod goes a long way: they have their patch, you have yours. They too bring the sea glass back to the human world where it can be loved again. Tiny glass mermaids coming home. Slow down. This is time to re-charge your senses with the sounds of the lapping sea, shingle underfoot and sea gulls. Feel the sand between your toes. Observe the natural colours and shapes. Who knows what else you might find. Tiny worlds filled with sea creatures lie beneath your feet. This is mindful time, or mindless thought wandering if you prefer it. Be ready to hear the sea glass sing out to you from its pebbly bed. Get down close to scour. Dig. If you find a good piece, stay to look in that area where its brothers and sisters may be tumbling too. I guess it’s unusual to have a big space to use for a small business in a maisonette like mine - two bedrooms in the London suburb of Twickenham. The studio was here before, built by the previous couple, he was a musician and music teacher and she was an artist. They used it as their own creative space. When I moved in it had a creative feel to it despite being empty. I felt warm there. The extra surfaces meant I could run silversmithing workshops (which everyone loved and I hope to do again). The cupboards hide all manner of things. Other storage is a mix of rustic crates and printers trays, to an IKEA classic or two. I also have a pegboard above the jewellery bench. Naturally I couldn’t resist adding my own flavour to the built in cupboards and painted leaves over them using various green emulsions from different brands. I also used my space as a consultation room for psychotherapy one day a week until recently, so I was fairly restrained and kept it minimal. I also added two more windows. Its higher than a normal table to protect your back from hunching over. It has a curve cut out where you sit so you can get close. It’s often covered in silver dust and scraps of silver, and half finished experiments that I’m not sure how to complete. Not yet. I clean it for photos and occasional visitors but otherwise I am quite good at shutting it out. Silversmithing Tools Silver melts and shapes are formed here. I have a myriad of tools I need on the top and on my peg board. Silversmithing is a wonderful activity though most of us build up our tools over time. One small file can cost £30 so we start with a basic selection and work our way up. On the bench is solder block or heatproof mat - mine looks a little tired but it does the job. This protects the surface from burning when I have the torch on, without burning itself. The torch is mainly to melt the solder - the solder flows between two or more pieces of silver and adheres them together at high temperatures. The cast pieces come back to me with a silver ‘sprue’ which need to be removed by filing and sanding too. I have a series of files and sandpapers to remove excess metal and file it down and down until it is smooth. I quite like the ‘labour’ of this, though I sometimes use my Dremmel, its still quite a lot of messy work. I like to earn the finished piece. The bench peg is there to support the pieces, they are usually quite knarly looking with dips and cuts to suit what the maker makes. I use a suede finger protector though my nails still always look atrocious. I would bet you good money you wouldn’t be able to find any silversmith with nice fingernails! I bought it on eBay, it’s an old treadle table - though to heavy to take to craft fairs. All the finished pieces are kept in the little cubbies, drawers and printers trays. I like to stay ahead with bestsellers, and usually have some ready to go, such as the oak leaf, hydrangea, cockle shell and ginkgo leaf necklaces amongst others. I assemble them into your necklaces, bracelets, earrings etc here. I shape and polish them, and package them in their cosy gift box with an inspiring quote and pretty business card. I also often hand-make little cards (when I have time; you can forget it at Christmas when you’ll get something simpler!) for some customers who want me to send the pretty packages directly to the recipient for a personal touch. If I do it all in the same place I get buried in jump rings, chains, tissue and twine. So I do it standing by the window where there’s space (sitting down is the new smoking, right?). I need the wide cill so I can fold the tissue paper (recycled and acid-free) into the right size to line the boxes. My teenage daughter (the original Grace Flora) sometimes helps me get these boxes ready in busy periods (for hard cash). I sprinkle over dried petals. I like my customers to have a lovely moment as they open their package, even if it’s a gift for someone else. The packaging has a natural, rustic feel. All the jewellery is handmade using recycled sterling silver. The great thing is it is recyclable too! Your jewellery arrives in a quality recyclable gift box made from 50% recycled board. I use recycle-able packaging and acid-free recycled tissue paper. Because I print the boxes in the studio, there are no complex chemical processes in the printing process. The jewellery is locally handmade here in the studio.
